POSITION STATEMENT: Four-day school weeks

Quite a few school districts in the rural West as well as urban schools in Texas, Missouri, and other states, are going to a four day school week. I think that is smart on the part of these school districts, and I commend them for their sensitivity to children and child development.

The problem with our education system is that we are putting too much of a burden on children given their age and development, while at the same time giving them too little of a time to absorb what they need to learn. It is about time some local education agencies (LEAs) took the time to give children a break from learning.

My ultimate stance on education is that we need homeschools more than ever, of the unschooling self-directed type. In the Early Church, children learned to read all on their own using the Bible left out by their parents. Written language is a human need, and thus most children can pick up written language real fast. This is just one concept relating to self-education.
