Many parents believe they rule over their children. The norm currently in the United States is that children are in the control of parents, and children are not to rebel or talk back. However, reverent rebellion is a Christian concept that applies to children in relation to their parents. The reverent rebellion of children is a Christian tradition dating back to biblical times.
Children are not culpable for their sins, meaning a child is capable of sin, but is not culpable until they are of age, which should be sometime when they are an adult, preferably when they are informed of what the faith teaches, preferably around ages 18-21 or sometime when children submit willingly to baptism. Before then, children are expected to rebel a bit, maybe a lot, and parents cut them some slack, meaning parents take responsibility and then sit down with children for a talk.
The Fifth Commandment is repeated in Colossians 3:20-21 KJV:
Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well-pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they become discouraged.
The Greek root word translated "obey" is υπακουο (Latin: hupakouo) and refers to secure, vulnerable rest in children, stemming from parents sacrificing for their children, just as Christ did for His children; taking up the cross for children, just as Christ did for His children; martyring oneself for one's children, just as Christ paid the ultimate price for His children, parents should be willing to do the same...and then children rest secure rest in the sacrifice of parents, reverently rebelling against the headship of parents, with children being able to tell parents anything or vent to them anything, perhaps even physically with a young or immature child, with parents taking the brunt. The Greek root word υπακουο uplifts the attachment parenting culture of ancient Jewish culture to the Christian context. Child nudity was legal everywhere in the biblical context, because of close access of skin-to-skin contact for children, with mothers being unclothed in the home as well as the children, and mothers gaining closeness and trust for children with skin-to-skin contact, and then respect later when children associate parents with warmth. Young children were swaddled to mothers until age 3, being breastfed by their mothers up until that age or even older. Reverent rebellion then involved toddlers hitting or physically attacking mothers to advocate needs that they had no words for, with parents being gracious in their tolerance of their child, turning the other cheek, knowing their worthless place in relation to their children.
The Greek root word translated "provoke...to anger" is ερεθιζο (Latin: erethizo) and literally translates to "stirring up" anger and upset in children, referencing the Jewish adage of "stirring the pot" in terms of the emotions of children. This was a direct command from God through the Apostle Paul against any physical and mental punishment. The Apostle Paul, alongside the Epistle to the Colossians, handed out pamphlets that recommended attachment parenting alternatives to the Hellenistic parenting traditions brought into the church, which was punitive in nature. Corporal punishment was a staple of Greco-Roman parenting, whereas Judeo-Christian parenting norms were traditionally attachment-based in nature. In the pamphlets, mothers were told to use skin-to-skin contact to earn cooperation and respect for their child. Fathers were commanded to abstain from parent sexual entitlement and pedophilic desires, with pedophilia being a part of parenting, and a negative part of parenting, meaning a negative way to bond with one's child when not kept at the connotational level.
Reverent rebellion is children rebelling towards their parents, meaning keeping their powers at bay, in the form of checks and balances. It is letting your child question you, and you heeding to your child's questions when your feet are held to the fire by them, which is their right, and then they rest securely once every question they have is answered...Reverent rebellion is rule from beneath, with children technically subservient to parents in terms of providence and care, but not physically.
The depraved and entitled parents will not inherit the Kingdom of God! Let them burn and descend into the lake of fire and burning sulfur, which is the second death, which is Satan's final resting place! Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
