"Back talk": Why talking back to parents is allowed under the Fifth Commandment

Many parents hate it when children talk back to them, and consider it bad behavior. It is a rare adult that can tolerate back talk, meaning adults like me who are submissive and passive around children, like all adults should be. Parents are commanded by God to tolerate back talk, meaning let the children talk back.

It says in Colossians 3:20-21 KJV:

Children, obey your parents in all things, as this is well-pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they become discouraged.

The Greek root word translated "obey" is υπακουο (Latin: hupakouo) and refers to secure, vulnerable trust and rest in the love and grace of parents, with children being able to do and say anything in relation to parents, and not fear punishment or control, owing nothing in return to parents for their providence, yet nonetheless showing gratitude and thanksgiving for the charity and acts of service from parents. The Greek root word translated "provoke...to anger" is ερεθιζο (Latin: erethizo) and literally translates to "stirring up" anger, resentment, and upset in children, meaning the Jewish idiom "stirring the pot", refer to the slightest of offense perceived by a child, which was usually counted as kidnapping, not mere theft, with this including any physical or mental punishment of a child, as assault and battery was a legal concept then, and included children in its scope of legal protection.

Children in ancient Israel and adjoining churches, children were kept close to parents, but otherwise had much freedom, including to tell off parents and talk back to them. Back talk wasn't seen as disrespect for a young child, but just part of childhood, meaning children were expected in Early Christian circles to show reverent rebellion, meaning children ran around within the supervision of parents, and rebelled righteously towards parents, with parents turning the other cheek and bearing the brunt of their child's rebellious behavior. Children ended up being free with their emotions around parents, but were strict with themselves away from parents, especially as they got older. Talking back, or making strong and assertive statements towards parents, was not discouraged by parents, with children not being punished for anything. Infants up to age 3 were swaddled in the bosom of mothers, with mothers breastfeeding oftentimes right up until that age, or older.

It is okay to let your children talk back. Reverent rebellion is a biblical tradition, with children being free to play their way, or no way at all, and nobody telling them otherwise, and them telling their parents how to treat them with respect, and parents respecting children more for their assertiveness. In biblical times, children were encouraged by fathers to stand up for themselves to them, meaning directly back to parents, meaning fathers and mothers alike wanted to be corrected by their child.

The depraved and entitled parents will not inherit the Kingdom of God! Let them burn and suffer in the lake of fire and burning sulfur, which is the second death prepared for Satan and his accomplices! Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
