Why parents must respect children first (not vice versa)

In the United States, our cultural conditioning in parenting demands respect from children. Most abusive parents in this country demand respect in this way. Respect in parenting is something that is very much misunderstood in biblical parenting. Respect is earned in parenting, not bestowed by the child for free.

It says in Ephesians 6:1-4 KJV:

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor thy father and mother, for this is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long upon the earth. And, ye father, provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

The Greek root word translated "obey" is υπακουο (Latin: hupakouo) and refers to secure, vulnerable rest in the care and safety of parents, being able to be themselves in relation to parents, being able to tell (or shout) anything to their parents, and not be in fear of punishment or controlling treatment, owing absolutely nothing in relation to parents, but nonetheless listening to parents and taking heed of instruction, not because of fear of parents but because of trust in parents. Children have the right to demand needs from parents, and parents must supply them, or else apologize when they absolutely cannot be supplied (i.e. low income). Parents are to be a shelter, so that children can be whomever they want to be in the presence of children, and a parent be a safe person for a child to be their energetic and exuberant selves. Parents are to love their children, with this love being Agape love, denoted by the Greek root world αγαπαο (Latin: agapao) and refers to selfless, dutiful submission to the every need of children, sacrificing for children just as Christ sacrificed for His children, rendering oneself lower than one's child, out of shamefaced humility, expecting absolutely nothing from children in return. Respect is earned in that regard.

The Greek root word translated "nurture" is παιδεία (Latin: paideia) refers to the chastening of the Lord, which is parents being disciplined and chastened up in the Lord, meaning self-control and centered attitudes in relation to children, in a way that listens to a child's upset instead of dismissing it as "bad behavior", allowing children to demand, and being chastened up by the demands of supplying said demands, with children being among the least of these in society, meaning the most vulnerable and oppressed of peoples. The Greek root word translated "admonition" is νουθεσία (Latin: nouthesia) and refers to the admonition of the Lord, meaning the word "no" or its various variants, which refers to setting limits and boundaries for children, backed up by trust and attachment to children. This is weighed by the Greek root word παροριγίζο (Latin: parorgizo) and refers to the offenses, meaning torts and damages under the Mosaic Law, with that including assault and battery, which protects children from physical and verbal battery as well as adults.

Attachment parenting was the norm in ancient Jewish homes, including Christian homes in the 1st Century. Respect for parents, in that culture, involved being attached to a parent, usually the mother, and many times in the form of co-sleeping or children being held by parents in a papoose bag, even at late ages. Respect for parents, in the biblical context, means feeling safe in the presence of parents, not fear of punishment from parents. Punishment was illegal against children, and only was legal for adults as a sentence for crime. Corporal punishment was not a method of church discipline in the Early Church.

Respect must be earned by parents, not demanded by children. It is the reverse in terms of demands. Children first, parents last. Children demand needs as respect, parents supply. Parents should reverently fear their child, as denoted by the Greek root word ψοβός (Latin: phobos) and refers to a child striking terror into parents in a low-level way that prompts the parents into submitting to God through their child, validating their every vulnerable need.

The depraved and entitled parents will not inherit the Kingdom of God! Let them rot and burn in eternal Hell-fire, which is the second death prepared for Satan and his accomplices! Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
