Children, obey your parents in the Lord, as this is right. Honor thy father and mother; as this is the first commandment with promise. That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long upon the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
The Greek root word translated "nurture" is παιδεία (Latin: paideia) and refers to the chastening of the Lord, meaning centering oneself in relation to children by way of pro-social self-behaviorism, meaning punishing and rewarding oneself for how you treat your child, in a way that allows you to listen to them, known as co-regulation. The Greek root word translated "admonition" is νουθεσία (Latin: nouthesia) and refers to setting limits and boundaries with children, basically the word "no" and its various variants. However, this is weighed by the Greek root word translated "provoke...to anger" which is παροργιζο (Latin: parorgizo) and refers to damages, meaning the slightest of personal slights perceived by the child, imposed by way of controlling, punitive, manipulative, or sexually entitled intent.
Parenting then was attachment-based, meaning parents, especially mothers, were close to their children, co-sleeping with their children, and otherwise having their children range close in their vicinity. Punishment of any kind towards a child was a violation of Jewish law, with punishment itself only being allowed within a judicial setting, or as church discipline in the New Testament. Corporal punishment was not a form of church discipline in the Early Christian church.
Let the parents who provoke their children to anger through punishment or permissiveness BURN! They will suffer the second death, which is prepared for Satan and his angels. Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
